ADDINGTON MARKET Prime Lambs Sell Well; Best To $7.70

Fat lambs were yarded in much larger numbers at Addington market yesterday, and the sale was again a very satisfactory one. There were again several sales at $7 or more.

While the fat sheep yarding was not a large one, the market was not as strong as last week. Wethers eased 30c, and ewes, after appearing to sell better in the opening stages, eased to previous levels.

Steers predominated in the fat cattle entry, and values, over-all, showed little change. There were again several sales of cows and heifers approaching $lOO, and there was one sale of a cow at $125. Good quality dairy cattle met a good sale. The top price for cows was $l7l for a particularly good Friesian. Fat Lambs With an entry of 1200 head, the fat lamb yarding was more than twice as big as last week’s offering. There was not a large selection of heavy butchers’ lambs, however, the bulk of the offering consisting of medium and light-weights. Good butchers’ lambs were up to last week’s good rates, and sometimes better. Others were firm to a shade easier.

The fat lamb yarding included four pens of shorn lambs—the first seen in the fat pens this season—and they sold from $4.70 to $5.

Prime heavy lambs, $6.20 to $7, with odd sales to $7.70. Prime medium, $5.60 to $6.10. Prime light, $5 to $5.45. Leading sales of fat lambs included: —

Fat Sheep Entries in the fat sheep section were 2660 head, compared with 2510 last week. The ewes were plain, but the market opened freely with values about 20c stronger than the last sale. By the end of selling, values were on a par with the last sale.

After a much bigger lamb sale earlier in the day, competition for wethers was not as good, and values were back about 30c a head on the last sale. Very few pens sold at $6 or more. Values were:—

Best young wethers, $5.80 to $6.30, with an odd sale to $7.15. Medium wethers, $5.30 to $5.70. Best older wethers, to $5.10. Other wethers, $4 to $4.50. Best ewes, $3 to $3.40 with an odd sale to $3.70.

Fat Cattle At 305 head, the fat cattle yarding was 84 fewer than last sale, but because of the supplies of beef, it was sufficient for the trade requirements. Values showed little change on last sale. Selling was slower in the opening stages, but the market improved later. Heifers and cows were forward in only small numbers, and could have been firmer.

Prime heavy steer beef sold to $l7 per 1001 b, prime medium weight from $18.25 to $19.25; prime heavy heifer beef $16.25 to $16.75, prime medium-weight $l7 to $18.25; prime butchers* cow beef $16.50 to $17.50, with lighter cow beef at $15.25 to $16.25. Values were:

Dairy Cattle Ten heifers, nine cows, and an advertised line of 10 cows in milk, made up the dairy cattle offering. While the sale attracted only local buyers, the market was firmer. Quality, was better, and competition for the pick of the entry was keen. The best heifers sold from $129 to $l4B, with average from $BO to $lll and others down to $56. Best cows sold from $l3l to $146, with a sale of one very attractive Friesian at $l7l. Medium cows realised from $lOO to $122, with others down to $BO. The advertised line of 10 cows in milk, had been in production since the spring, and sold from $75 to $99. Vealers At 110 head, the veal entry was not a large one. Wellfinish_ed vealers and calves showing some quality sold firmly; some of the bigger young cattle sold well. The best of the veal entry sold from $BO to $85.50, with medium from $6B to $76, and lighter from $6O to $66. Best calves sold from $48.50 to $54, with medium from $32 to $4O and smaller from $lB to $24. Bulls Seventeen bulls were penned, and top price this week was $l3B for a Shorthorn. There were several sales of Aberdeen Angus and Friesian bulls at $lOO to $124, and lighter beasts sold from $7O to $9O. Fat Pigs

The entry in the pork section was small and quality was mixed. The best quality pigs were firm on late values, but others were hard to quit. Light pork had little demand, but the few good medium and heavy porkers met reasonable competition. The best baconers were on a par with last sale, but a number of fat and heavy pigs sold at a discount. There was a full chopper entry, but quality was poor.

Values were: Light porkers, $13.10 to $14.80. Medium porkers, $16.30 to $lB.BO.

Heavy porkers, $19.20 to $20.20.

Light bacon, $20.80 to $21.40. Medium and heavy, $22 to $25. Choppers, unfinished, $3.25 to $13.50. Finished, $17.50 to $32.75, with odd sales to $36.25.

Store Pigs There was a medium entry in the store pig section, but as in the fat pig sale, quality-was mixed. Competition was not as strong as in previous weeks, and while the best quality pigs sold well in the early stages, values fell over the last two races. Sales were hard to make, and some pens were passed. As in all aspects of the pig industry at present, buyers put a premium on quality. Good store pigs were firm on last sale, but other pigs were easier. Slips and medium stores were mainly sought after, while large stores and weaners met limited demand. Only a few sows were offered, and in-pig sows sold from $9 to $lB, while a sow and litter sold at $2O. Values were: Small weaners, $2.50 to $3.50. Best weaners, $3.80 to $4.60. Slips, $4.80 to $5.80. Small and medium stores, $6.50 to $9. Large Stores, $9.50 to $l2.
