MELBOURNE Minings were again the main interest. In heavy trading new peaks were established but most issues closed below their day’s best, and some lost ground slightly. Western Mining reached a peak of 5750 and closed 80 up at 5500. C.R.A. reached 1400 before closing 30 higher at 1370 and Hampton Areas gained 20 at 980 after 1000. Nth B.H. finished down 30 at 900 after a new peak of 960 Oils were irregular. Oil Search down 7 to 73. Falls shaded rises in industrials. B.H.P. dropped 25 to 1890, Peko down 140 to 1030. Other moves were moderate.

Booming mining stocks showed some signs of a reaction towards the close of business. Many of the fastest rising shares in recent days levelled out and there were quite a number which weakened noticeably. In spite of this, mining turnover exceeded 2.200,000 Western Mining reached a record of 5800 c before easing to close 120 c better at 5550 c.
Several oil exploration stocks were affected by profit taking. Longreach eased 9c to 90c, and Oil Search lost 5c to 23c after reaching 86c. Several others "closed a shade higher or unchanged but below the day’s high point. Industrials were active. B.H.P. lost 10c to 1900 c, Peko Wallsend 125 c to 1040 c but Thiess added 27c to 552 c.
