AIRCRAFT RETURNS
Fumes In Hold
Fuel fumes tn the cargo hold forced a large United States Air Force Cargomaster on a flight to the United States to return to Christchurch 32 minutes after it had taken off at 10.9 p.m. yesterday. Soon after landing Air Force engineers checked the aircraft to determine where the fumes were coming from. The Cargomaster was carrying three dismantled Iroquois helicopters, which had been used for a survey at Marie Bjrd Land, and about 15 servicemen. On its return to Christchurch the heavy aircraft dropped a quantity of fuel off the Canterbury coast. There was no danger. This is a normal procedure to get an aircraft down to a recognised landing weight. Reports of the fuel being contaminated have been dismissed. It is believed that fuel was left in the power units of the three helicopters and that this might have been the source of the fumes. The return of the aircraft was not treated as an emergency at the airport. Crash tenders and ambulances were on standby alert. The Cargomaster is expected to leave today.
