U.S. General Praised

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)

WASHINGTON, Feb. 6.

The United States Defence Secretary (Mr Robert McNamara) has denied the truth of reports that General William Westmoreland, the United States military commander in South Vietnam, might be replaced in the aftermath of the Viet Cong commando attacks of the last week.

“I know of no plans to change him,” Mr McNamara said after a meeting with the Senate Armed Services Committee. “General Westmoreland has served with extraordinary distinction for a very long time in South Vietnam,” he said. “He is one of the really great generals our nation has produced in this century.”

General Earle Wheeler, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, echoed Mr McNamara’s sentiments adding: “I have the greatest respect for General Westmoreland’s ability. He has done an outstanding job for over four years.”
