Continental Film Season Planned

Over the next three months a series of Continetal and intercontinental films representing some of the best work of Italian, French and Scandinavian directors will be shown in the Carlton Cinema, as well as films of opera and ballet. The immediate release is John Donner’s Swedish comedy “Tc Love,” starring Harriet Andersson and the Polish actor, Zbigniew Cybulski. This will be followed by the Carlo Ponti colour production, “The Girl And The General,” starring Rod Steiger (who is strongly tipped to win this year’s Academy Award as best actor), and the Italian stars, Virna Lisi and Umberto Orsini. Towards the end of February Federico Fellini's “Juliet of the Spirits” will be shown, the first full-length colour film by the director of “La Dolce Vita” and “La Strada”; starring the director’s wife Giulietta Masina. The production won three Academy Awards for its colour design, costume, and photography.

Another international director of note is Greece’s Michael Cacoyannis, famous for his “Zorba the Greek.” His new film, “The Day the Fish Came Out,” starring Tom Courtenay, will be released in March. After this there will be a highly controversial but well praised Swedish movie, “My Sister, My Love,” starring Bibi Anderson, Jarl Kulle (of “Dear John”), and Per Oscarsson.

Perhaps one of the most famous Continental films, Marcel Carne’s “Les Enfants

du Paradis,” featuring Arletty and Jean-Louis Barault, will be shown towards the middle of March. Also of note is Tony Richardson’s film, “Summer Fires,” starring Jeanne Moreau in a screen play by Jean Genet. For music lovers, there will be a new full-length colour film of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Mikado,” filmed in England, and featuring the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company: plus a new colour film of Verdi’s “La Travlata,” featuring Anna Moffo and the Chorus and Orchestra of the Rome Opera House. The Easter release at the Carlton will be a new film woven around the life of the composer Beethoven. Entitled “The Magnificent Rebel,” the production was filmed entirely in Vienna in colour, starring Carl Boehm as Beethoven. For ballet lovers, there will be a full-length colour film of Tchaikovsky’s “The Sleeping Beauty,” featuring the celebrated Russian company, the Kirov Ballet, and the prima ballerina Natalia Dudlnskaya.
