CROQUET PLAYERS
Farewell Party
A party of Australian women croquet players which has been visiting Christchurch was entertained recently by the Canterbury Croquet Association at a party to bid them farewell.
The Mayor of Christchurch (Sir George Manning) spoke of the close relationship between Australians and New Zealanders, particularly since Britain had announced the intention of withdrawing its forces from the Pacific earlier than had been expected. New Zealand and Australia were also closely allied in croquet, as they had put in dual challenges to Britain for the Macßobertson Test matches, to ba held in Australia next year, said Mrs W. H. Kirk, on behalf of the New Zealand Croquet Council. Mrs J. G. Johnston, president of the Canterbury Croquet Association, gave each visitor a mounted New Zealand gemstone. Mrs E. A. McConachie, president of the Australian Croquet Council and leader of the visiting Australian party, presented Mrs Johnston with a boomerang.
A variety programme of entertainment was given by the Aranui Townswomen’s Guild.
