SUBSIDY ON FLATS
The Health Department had repeated its belief that it was unlikely that subsidy would be granted on 30 single flats to be built at Hornby as one undertaking, the clerk (Mr A. Kelly) told the Paparua County Council last evening. The department said this view took into account the current economic position, and the fact that pensioner housing construction was at a fairly high level both In Christchurch and nationally. It might be better for the council to build three blocks of six flats as a first stage, said Mr Kelly. The council decided to get a report on the economic and other aspects of building 18 units instead of 30 as planned. “The Minister patted us on the back when he opened the Soekburn cottages,” said Cr L. J. Cutler. “The Hornby flats are needed, but we get knocked back."
