Awards For Factory And Home Gardens
In spite of recent stormy weather, most gardens entered in the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s competitions judged yesterday, made a good showing.
The winning factory garden was that of T. J. Edmonds, Ltd, Ferry Road, which has won on previous occasions. Mr L. A. Bennett, one of the judges of the home garden section, said the only effect of the storm was a slight loss of colour. There was a greater use of trees and shrubs in the small gardens, but still a lack of dwarf shrubs. Mr Bennett suggested that a selection of apples as cordons in very small gardens could be of benefit
Some gardens with distinct possibilities lost points because insufficient attention had been paid to fruit and vegetable culture, the judge of the novice section, Mr L. Metcalf, commented. Results were:—
