FURTHER OFF
tN.I. Press Association! WANGANUI, Feb. 4. Although a trial air consignment of choice lamb cuts will be made next month, airfreighting of New Zealand produce in bulk is further off than at first thought Mr W. J. Polson, a member of the Meat Board, said this today on his return from a threeweek tour of the United States.
"I can’t see any major break-through in New Zealand airfreighting big quantities of meat before 1972-75,” Mr Polson said. It was originally estimated that New Zealand would be airfreighting in bulk by 1970.
Mr Polson, who made a comprehensive study of the three largest aircraft companies in the world— Boeing, Lockheed and Douglas claimed that present freight rates made bulk airfreighting prohibitive.
"We would have to pay 15c-20e a pound on a leg of 2200 statute miles. That is too much,” he said. "But when the Jumbo jets are operating in 1972-75 it will be a different story- Pan American Airways has ordered 40 such aircraft and they estimate the freight rate then will be sc-7c a pound. “These rates will allow New Zealand to go into airfreighting in a big way.”
