Reporter Wins Marlborough Cup

“The Press” Special Service BLENHEIM.

Reporter was re-

warded for his consistency when he held

on to take the Marlborough Cup, first leg of the T.A.B. double, from the Nelson winner, Chief Judge, on Saturday.

The four-year-old gelding by Thurber Frost from the good race mare. Zany, was kept handy to the leaders by E. Harding until the straight entrance, when he challenged This Time, Shadydale and Winning Song. He had command at the furlong and was several lengths clear before Chief Judge loomed up on the outside with a belated run that failed by a neck.

This Time battled on for third after having taken the lead at the end of half a mile. She was a length and a half back and five lengths clear of Shadydale, which failed to run on as expected Unreal got up to dead-heat for fourth. Winning Song was a close sixth, followed by Highland Hills, Boy Logan and Jink.

Boy Logan and Muluka lost ground at the start and Chief Judge also bobbled as the barrier was released and lost a few lengths.

Flying King, after showing good form at Nelson, won the President’s Handicap and completed a double worth $15.40. Bragen and Garriman collided at the start and were put out of the race. Saladin broke in the first furlong and the favourite, Cadane, broke going down the back the first time. Flying King escaped trouble by being one of the leaders with Honest Sal, but he lost his place after passing the halfmile and was several places back at the straight entrance. Honest Sal, Darcy, Lyncris, and Whippy were battling at the furlong when Flying King came on the outside to head them near the line and win going away by a length. Darcy, which had been just behind the leaders al) the way, held on for second a head in front of Honest Sal, which was three lengths clear of Lyncris and Misty Rain, both of which

had every chance. Whippy weakened to sixth. He was followed by Release, which had been prominent early, and Glenafton.

Marksman, which w-as handy at the furlong, stumbled in the straight and fell but caused no interference to other runners. Early in the day Solinos graduated from maiden ranks with an impressive win in the Otaki Handicap. He was eighth favourite in a field of 15 and he finished fast to win by a neck from Aroma, which had been one of the leaders throughout.

Caretaker w’as a length away third after having been slow early. Limbo Jim was only a nose away fourth after having lost ground approaching the half-mile. Eden Song weakened to fifth and Princess Paiaka gained ground for sixth. Tiny Sal had her second win on the circuit when she finished strongly to head High land in the Hillersden Handicap, second leg of the oncourse concession double, which paid $304,65 and $242.50. Highland appeared to be in for a comfortable win when he was clear into the straight from Hagan, Surrey Hills, Stoney Burke, Whippy, and Tiny Sal. At the furlong Tiny Sal moved up fast and set out after Highland, u’hich wilted near the end. Tiny Sal won by a head. Hi Dryden finished well for third but was four lengths and a half back. Hagen and Stoney Burke dead-heated for fourth.

Only 161 tickets were reinvested on the second leg and of these 13 were held on the Tiny Sal-Willowbrae bracket and only seven on Command. The meeting was preceded by a heavy shower, and half an hour after the meeting there was a hail storm. Otherwise the weather was fine.
