First African Teacher
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter) MUFULIRA (Zambia). One of the first African schoolteachers in Zambia, 68-year-old James Lumbwe, has been visiting one of his sons, who has followed in his footsteps and become vice-princi-pal of Mufulira Training College.
Mr Lumbwe was one of the first Africans of the Mporokoso district to be baptised a Christian by the London Missionary Society. He became the first teacher at a school opened by the mission about 1915. He has had a varied career as a Government typist, a soldier-interpreter with the King’s African Rifles in World War I, a British consulate clerk, a miner, and a hospital technician.
