Holy Hal Fancied At Forbury Park

Holy Hal will only have to race as well as he did when fifth in the Flying Mile at Addington Raceway last Wednesday to win the Forbury Mile at Forbury Park tomorrow evening.

Holy Hal was wide out for the first furlong and a half of last week’s race and was in the open all the way. In the circumstances it was not surprising that he wilted a little over the final furlong.

In many ways this field is much weaker than the field he encountered at Addington, especially as the four horses to finish in front of him are not engaged. Holy Hal is one of the early favourites for the Inter-Dominion Championship series at Auckland next month and if he is to justify that position he will need to win this race fairly easily. C. C. Devine’s bracket, Bass Strait and Demure, will be in demand. Bass Strait was no danger at Addington last week, when he finished ninth. However, he is a smart sprinter and he could be to the fore. Demure did not start at Addington because of an unfavourable barrier draw. She will start from No. 4 in this race and should be a sound prospect.

Barrier positions are important at the mile starting point at Forbury Park and Atanui, from No. 1, should be one of the better prospects. Her second to Corwar on the first night of the meeting showed that she had improved immensely since she finished fifth in the Timaru Cup a week earlier. She could show further improvement to run Holy Hal to a close decision. Like the Southland four-year-old, she will be a contender for the Inter-Do-minion series.

Black Tulip, a mile winner earlier, Glen Vale and Password are others capable of bold showings. The club changed the order of the races so that the Royal Handicap instead of the Otago Mile could be the second leg of this double. The Otago Mile has drawn a small, but interesting, field. Prospector, Spanaway and Kimberley Kid have shown fine form lately and they should be three of the better prospects, although Newport Maid, Meadow Bank, Student and Leading Light could make them work hard to extend their records. The on-course concession double will be run on the Kew Handicap and the Dalmore Handicap. Fair weather is forecast and the track will be fast.
