TRIAL AT WINTON
Cup Fancy Does Well “The Press” Special Service INVERCARGILL. Fort Nelson, one of the early favourites for the Dunedin Festival Cup at Forbury Park on Saturday night, showed that he had taken no harm from his win in the Flying Mile at Addington last week, when he appeared at trials held by the Southland Trotting Owners’, Trainers’ and Breeders’ Association at Winton yesterday. Fort Nelson started from 36 yards in a useful field. He received a good run on the inner in the middle stages and was challenging the pacemaker, Apt, at the straight entrance. Fort Nelson won as he liked by six lengths in 3min 20 3-5 sec, the last half-mile in Imin 6sec, an exceptionally good run on a greasy track- Prince John and Apt filled the placing:?. A smart performance was credited to the four-year-old, Dark Sun, which finished second to Chunder Loo in a novice event. Dark Sun, which appears to be near his best, ran his last half-mile on the outside of the field in Imin 6sec, and was not required to do his best. He may race on the third night of the Forbury meeting.
