ENGINEER RETIRES
195 Trips To Chathams
A ship’s engineer who made 195 trips to the Chatham Islands in fishing boats retired last Friday from P. Feron and Son, Ltd, after 30 years service. He is Mr W. M. Morris, who is aged over 80 years. A presentation was made to Mr Morris by both the company and staff. The managing director of Feron’s (Mr M. L. Newman) said that Mr Morris had joined the company as an engineer in the company’s steam trawlers, Cowan and Phyllis, in 1938. He was company engineer till 1943. At that time, Mr Morris went into semi-retirement in charge of the company’s shipping and customs office. He remained in this job till be retired last week. Mr Morris had been associated with fishing boats and the fishing industry in Canterbury for many years. He came to New Zealand from London, having spent much of his earlier life at sea as an engineer in the United Kingdom and the United States. He arrived in New Zealand in the Canterbury Shipping Company’s ship Gale. Later he returned to the United Kingdom to bring out the South Sea, a trawler, for the South Sea Fishing Company. He served as engineer in the South Sea and in the Chatham Island steamer Tees. On his retirement Mr Morris will live at his Diamond Harbour home.
