State Mill To Close

(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, Jan. 26. The Roa State sawmill, Blackball, which is run at a profit by the Mines Department, would be closed in March, the mill’s 15 employees were told today. The member of Parliament for Westland (Mr P. Blanchfield) has been asked to attend an urgent meeting of the employees on Sunday morning. Mr Blanchfield said today he was “most concerned” and had already made urgent representations to the Minister of Mines (Mr Shand) on the matter. The mill was built in 1947 and supplies timber for mines, the Ministry of Works, the railways, and other Government departments. In 1965 its profit was $25,168, in 1966 $9542, and last year it was expected to be about $28,000.
