RACING Palisade Scratched; Six Runners Left In Stakes

The veterans, Palisade and Baloo, were scratched yesterday for the major races on the final day of the Wellington Cup meeting today.

Palisade was taken out of the Trentham Stakes, in which he was second to Terrific last year, and Baloo, bothered by a leg injury, has been scratched from the Wellington Racing Club Handicap.

The withdrawal of Palisade leaves the South Island without a runner in the Trentham Stakes, and must also ensure that Ben Lomond will be a stronger favourite than ever.

Ben Lomond, like many of New Zealand’s top performers, is trained in the Waikato,

and that district seems certain to have strong representatives all along the line today. Fairfleet, Bright Chief, and Udare will be a formidable trio for Matamata stables in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, and there is much to commend the chances of Pell Mell, from Cambridge, and the Te Rapa pair, Miss Lynette and Gene, in the second leg, the George Adams Handicap.

The way of a back runner is often hard in packed mile fields at Trentham, but Tara’s Pride and Pheroz Pride are milers of such quality that they must be given the strongest consideration in the richest race on today’s programme.

Takanini hopes will rest with the three-year-old Nausori, a newcomer at the meeting, and Bywon, which seldom runs badly at Trentham

and which won there on Monday. After fine weather throughout the week the track will be hard and fast.
