Quadrant, September-October, 1967. No. 49, Vol. XL No. 5. Edited by Peter Coleman and James McAuley. H. R. Krygier, Sydney. 96 pp. Published six times a year from Sydney for the Australian Association for Cultural Freedom, the current issue of “Quadrant,” besides a parcel of verse and a continuation of school memoirs, covers such diverse topics as Britain’s defence policies, political Catholicism, the problems of Sabbatical Leave, and a Soviet critique of Australian philosophy. Especially provoking is Patrick McCaughey’s essay, “The Art Critic.” Altogether too short for the questions it raises, McCaughey’s article is a nononsense brief for a revaluation of the art critic’s role. He takes his stand from Baudelaire’s criteria, “feeling, morality and pleasure” - and proceeds to ask for a long overdue re-thinking by both public and critic on the abysmal state of art criticism.
