First Of Chathams Dories Completed

Japanese fishermen are not the only ones who see the advantages of dories. A Lyttelton shipbuilding firm, Messrs Stark Brothers, Ltd, has just completed the first of three ordered for use in the Chathams.

The first dory, the 18ft Picton 1 has been ordered by the

Picton Fishing Company, which already has the trawler Picton crayfishing in the Chathams. Captain A. S. Aberdein, managing-director of the Picton Fishing Company, and master of the Picton, said at Lyttelton yesterday that the kauri-hulled, clinker-built dory would be used for crayfishing close inshore where the larger Picton could not penetrate. The double-ended dory, built in two weeks, will be hoisted on davits recently installed at the Picton’s stern. It will be shipped to the Chathams aboard the Holmdale next week. The dory is powered by a 13 h.p. engine and will have a cruising speed of about eight knots. Stark brothers will build a similar dory for the Timaru trawler Moray Rose and this will be drawn up through the trawler’s large stem ramp. A 20ft dory ordered for the Chathams will be shore-based. The Moray Rose will leave Lyttelton for the Chathams with the new trawler Prospector 1 in tow. Captain Aberdein flew from the Chathains to take command for the trip. He will rejoin the Picton on arrival at the Chathams. The trawlers are waiting for good weather.
