Opossums In Danger

Opossums, regarded as a pest in New Zealand but a protected native aniinal in New South Wales for the last 37 years, may soon lose their immunity from shooters’ guns in the Australian state. The fur industry has asked the New South Wales Government to declare an open season this year for the shooting of opossums, and the National Parks and Wildlife Advisory Council has set up a sub-committee to consider the request and to find out whether there are too many of the animals in the State. An open season in Tasmania last year yielded 100,000 skins.—Sydney, January 25.
