Winning Debut By Roche

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY. One of the Australian Davis Cup stars in the recent challenge round, A. Roche, staged a triumphant entry into professional tennis with a win over N. Pilic (Jugoslavia) in the final of a series played in Sydney yesterday.

Roche’s win earned him $12,450. Roche strove for every point, but it was not until the last quarter that he really dominated the Jugoslav. J. Newcombe, who signed up with World Championship Tennis at the same time as Roche, played an exhibition match against D. Ralston. AMATEURS In Melbourne, the American, Miss Rosemary Casal’s charge through the Australian amateur women’s singles field came to a sudden end. She came up against Mrs Margaret Court, the former world women’s champion, in top form. Mrs Court finished Miss Casals in just 37 minutes the American did not win one game in the first set and won only two in the second set. The win was sweet revenge for Mrs Court because Miss Casals had eliminated her in an early round of the Victorian championships four months ago. It was Mrs Court’s best form since she came out of

retirement at the beginning of this Australian season. She now must be given an excellent chance of extending her old rival, Mrs B. J. King.
