Blenheim Still Sunniest Centre

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 26. Blenheim retained its place in 1967 as New Zealand’s sunniest centre.

In the table of sunshine reports released by the Meteorological Service in Wellington tonight the sunniest centres in New Zealand in 1967 were Blenheim, 2481 hours; Riwaka and Motueka, 2432; Lake Tekapo, 2398: Whakatane, 2327; Nelson, 2321; Tauranga, 2245; Wairoa, 2245; and Gisborne, 2238. Auckland led the four main centres with 2117 hours from ! Christchurch (2051). Wellington recorded 2028 hours of sunshine, Musselburgh, Dunedin 1686; and Dunedin Airport 1779. The lowest readings were at Invercargill Airport with 1593 hours and the Hermitage, Mount Cook with 1516.

There was no doubt about the wettest place. Haast aerodrome with 164.37 in had a lead of just over 45in from Hokitika (119.49 in Alexandra was the driest with only 13.69 in recorded. Oamaru (16.8 in and Timaru (18.77 in were the only others of 46 recording places

A new by-law for the control of dogs in Akaroa, was yesterday adopted in draft form by the Akaroa County Council. Among other provisions, the by-law states that all dogs in the county town must be tied up from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise, that no dogs are permitted on the wharf, beach or playgrounds, and that they must be on a lead when in the street. Working dogs can be under “direct personal control” on the street. The by-law also bans any person in the county town from having more than three dogs or three cats without a special licence from the council. There are also restrictions against noisy birds or animals. In its report, the county town committee recommended that the council adopt the new by-law by the usual process of special order and advertisement.

Oamaru had only 84 days on which rain was recorded Ashburton (88), Blenheim (96), and Christchurch (97), were the only other places which had fewer than 100 rain days in the year. The only recording station which had more than 200 days on which some rain fell was Invercargill Airport with 209 days.
