Mauritius Clashes
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) PORT LOUIS (Mauritius), January 25. Fresh racial clashes flared yesterday after a night of comparative calm which followed the arrival of British troops on Mauritius. A Government communique described the isolated incidents as an upsurge of antagonism between Muslims and Creoles—two minor communities in the island’s multiracial population. Security forces dispersed a crowd of 1000 people—some of whom were armed with Molotov cocktails—and reported other incidents including acid attacks, minor stabbings, attacks on cars and an attempted kidnapping. No deaths were reported to add to the 17 people killed during a week of racial rioting which swept the capital.
