CORONARY CARE

50.000 Could Be Saved (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) NEW YORK, January 25. More than 50,000 people with “hearts too good to die” could be saved every year if all heart attack victims had access to adequate facilities, according to Dr Jesse Edwards, president of the American Heart Association. Speaking at an association luncheon yesterday, Dr Edwards said that expansion of coronary care units could yield the life-saving equivalsuccessful heart transplants yearly. This could be done without worrying about blood compatibility or organ rejection, and without surgery. Coronary care units are designed to provide for the continuous monitoring of the vital functions of a heart attack patient in hospital, with an alarm system to alert specialists to deal with sudden emergencies.
