Stable Double Likely At Nelson Meeting

Highfire and Kiwi Clipper, both from C. C. Devine’s Templeton stable, form a likely combination for the T.A.B. double on the first day of the Nelson Trotting Club’s summer meeting at Richmond Park tomorrow.

Highfire, which has raced well on the Nelson course in the past, will have to give away starts of 36 yards in the Nelson Cup, but he is unlikely to strike a weaker field and the task should be well within his capabilities. Highfire was fourth over two miles behind Certify at Rangiora in December and finished seventh over 13 furlongs at Addington Raceway on January 1 at his only start since then. The bracket of Sarefree and Reporter, from C. S. Hunter’s Upper Hutt team, will be solidly supported and should offer spirited opposition to Highfire. Trafalgar will only have to make a smooth beginning from 60 yards to get into the finish. His form in much stronger company in the last two months has been of a sufficiently high standard to give him a great chance. Intercede, twice second at Hutt Park recently, appeals most of the others.

Kiwi Clipper, a runaway winner over 10 furlongs at Washdyke at his second race start, should carry on his winning way in the Yonkers Three and Four-year-old Stakes, a race in which Devine also has Golightly engaged. Fabrication, a decisive winner in fast time at Hutt Park, and Charles may be the hardest for Kiwi Clipper to beat, while the chances of Imperial Way, Hagan, Gay Light and Release cannot be overlooked. The on-course concession double will be run on the Appleby Handicap and the Stoke Handicap. Fine weather is forecast and the track will be fast.
