Fired At Tyre

(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, Jan. 24. A farmer who disturbed two youths stealing petrol on his farm early this morning fired into a rear tyre of their vehicle when they tried to make off, the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court was told today. Arrested later, the two youths appeared in court jointly charged with both stealing petrol and attempting to steal petrol. Peter Stuart Muir, aged 19, and Geoffrey Alan Underhill, aged 17. pleaded guilty. Prosecuting, Sergeant G. Wicks said the pair

met in Hamilton about midnight last night, and decided to steal some petrol. They syphoned two gallons from a parked vehicle at Whatawhata. They then went to a farm and, while trying to steal petrol from a drum, were disturbed by the farmer. As they drove away the farmer fired into a rear tyre of their vehicle. Police chased the youths and arrested them. Mr T. B. Mooney, S.M., remanded the youths on bail of $lOO and surety of a like amount, until February 2.
