N.I. Canals Plan

(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, Jan. 25. Preliminary work is expected to begin this year on two canals linking the Manukau and Waitemata harbours with the Waikato River. The chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board (Mr R. Savory) said today that the board had agreed to grant a licence to an Auckland engineering consortium, backed by Wright, Stephenson and Company. Ltd, and MacConnell, Dowell, Ltd, to begin surveys The consortium was expected to spend between $40,000 and $60,000 on the survey. Mr Savory said a Government Minister had told him the two canals would form an essential part of the Auckland and Waikato transport network “as soon as the economic climate was suitable.” Whether the consortium or the Government actually constructed the canals would be decided in the next few

nionths, Mr Savory said. "It is quite probable that the Government will be looking for projects of this sort within the next 12 months to find employment for the millions of dollars worth of men and machinery at present idle in the construction industry,” he added.
