Australia Day

New Zealanders recently shared with Australians their grief in the loss of the Prime Minister of Australia (Mr Holt) and they now shared their confidence that Senator Gorton would give the leadership necessary in such a rapidly developing nation, said Sir Joseph Ward, dean of the Christchurch Consular Corps, last evening. He was speaking at a reception held by the Australian Government Trade Commissioner in the South Island (Mr Maxwell Daniel) to celebrate the one hundred and eightieth anniversary of Australia Day. New Zealanders also hoped to see a growth in trade between Australia and New Zealand and an increase in the number of Australian tourists, who would always receive a warm welcome, he said. Welcoming Mr Daniel to his new appointment in Christchurch, Sir Joseph Ward said he hoped Mr and Mrs Daniel and their family would find their time in New Zealand richly rewarding. Closely Allied Australia and New Zealand would become closer in the years ahead as their destinies were very strongly allied, Mr Daniel said in his reply. “It has been said that the bright boy of the class usually achieves his position because he has a good mate. 1 am not sure that Australia has qualified as the ‘bright boy,’ but I am sure she has a good mate in New Zealand,” he said.

More than 200 guests attended the reception. They included the Mayor of Christchurch (Sir George Manning) and Lady Manning; representatives of the Churches; Christchurch, West Coast and South Canterbury local bodies; the judiciary; members of Parliament; the consular service; the armed services; the United States Antarctic support force; the public service; public bodies; business and commercial interests; racing and trotting clubs; Commonwealth societies: community organisations; Australian staff members of the University of Canterbury; and broadcasting and press. The reception was held on I the lawn at Elizabeth House.
