AWAITING ANOTHER

Mother Of 22 (N.Z. Press Association) WHANGAREI, Jan. 24. Mrs Maria Beckham, aged 45, of Pipiwai, 30 miles from Whangarei, is awaiting the birth in the next week or so of her twentythird child. Waiting at home with her are 13 of her children and 10 of her grandchildren. The grandchildren are the offspring of two of her daughters who are now dead, one by accident, and the other by sickness. Seven of Mrs Beckham’s children have died, none in childhood. Her husband, Mr Toko Beckham, has been off work about three months with a leg ailment. He was a freezing worker and bush worker. The family lives on a farm with three accommodation buildings—one of them set aside for eating. There is no electricity, and washing the dishes is called the “hard part” of life. The family has a big garden.
