10s A 3c Peach
(N.Z. Press Association) BLENHEIM, January 24. Londoners fond of peaches are prepared to pay 10s each for them at present This was the top price for peaehes in the 33 trays consigned by air from Blenheim to Covent Garden just over a week ago. The poorer ones among the consignment sent by Mr R. Cragg, of Blenheim, brought a mere Bs. At his Blenheim orchard Mr Cragg sells much the same quality for local consumption at between 2c and 3c.
Mr Cragg said today that the London price was “a miracle.” The cable from his agents contained an apology for the “low price” —the peaches were slightly bruised. It is too late for another shipment of the Wiggins variety to be air freighted as the peaches are too ripe. Mr Cragg said he would perhaps try later in the season with the Million Dollar variety or with Golden Queens and Mary’s Choice. About 850 peaches were sent. Air freight and commission would total a few hundred dollars, but even so the trial was worth while, Mr Cragg said.
