HOLIDAY BREAKS
Killing Pause Criticised Why was it necessary for local freezing works to close over the Christmas period? asked Mr H. G. Grigg at a meeting yesterday of the executive of North Canterbury Federated Farmers. “The men have had half the year off, and the works have barely resumed killing," he said. “It takes until the middle of January to clear the backlog. I believe works elsewhere are open over the holidays.” Previous attempts to stop the practice had not been a success, said Mr W. N. Dunlop. “It is ridiculous for the industry to stop work at the middle of the peak of the season, at a time when it is essential to get as much as we can on the market,” he said. “This year a substantial number of lambs were shut out. That is poor economics from a national point of view.” The meat and wool section was asked to take up the question.
