SHOT PUT RECORD
Two Canterbury records were broken at a meeting held by the Technical Athletic Club last evening. H. J. Ruffell Improved his Canterbury junior shot put record by nearly 3ft. Hia best put of 55ft s(in was lOfin less than the New Zealand record. Mr V. Briedis. who coaches Ruffell. said; “This is wonderful. He has improved 17ft in a year’s training. He should beat the New Zealand record any time now.”
G. May (High School) performed well in the junior shot put. with 44ft 2}in.
Miss R. McFarland ran ll.Ssec in the under-15 women’s 100 yards. This was l-10sec better than the Canterbury record. She also jumped 16ft 3in to win the under-15 long jump. She won the 80 metres hurdles in 13.6 sec, an excellent time for her age.
Miss V. Gilmour was an inch behind the Canterbury long jump senior record when she jumped 18ft Siin.
Miss L. Johns was within fin of the Canterbury record in the under-17 long jump with a jump of 17ft 6in. She was also within 1-lOsec of the Canterbury record for the 80 metres hurdles, with 12sec.
Miss L. Hurrell beat Miss B. Poulsen to win the senior sprint by about 2ft. Both were given the same time of 11.2 sec. Miss Hurrell thus avenged her only defeat this season, by Miss Poulsen, at Ashburton on January 13.
