Plunket Shield Cricket

Sir, —I concur with your editorial on Plunket Shield cricket. However, there was much unsaid, which might have been added, without treading on any corns. I have had the pleasure of playing cricket in several centres in New Zealand, as well as in Egypt and Japan, and have always had the desire to get on with the game and to play for the game’s sake. I don’t hold with time-wasting tactics. I believe that some other points system, without a shield as a reward, could be the answer to the problem of spectator loss at Plunket Shield games. Perhaps the Fijians are not serious enough for the purist, but their initiative is refreshing and entertaining. Enterprising batting, over rates, fielding, etc., should be considered, and points awarded only for outright wins.—Yours, etc., R. M. BAIRD, January 18, 1968.
