Prices Of Fruit And Vegetables

Sir,—High prices for fruit and vegetables (man-made shortages) result from the failure of the Minister of Industries and Commerce to hold 'an inquiry into trading practices of produce merchants and the way auctions are conducted. By allowing increases in prices of oranges and bananas the Minister is protecting the merchants and retailers who are doing nothing to protect their customers. Produce at the auctions is being run up, by auctioneers and staff who buy for small retailers and others not present at the auction. Housewives, these gentlemen are highly paid to create high prices. Their wives get free oranges, etc. Supermarkets have their own experienced buyers. Until the auction is abolished and fixed prices for vegetables are established, my advice to all housewives is to buy vegetables, apples, etc., direct from the growers. Oranges are only for the wealthy.— Yours, etc., F. R. MILLER. January 23, 1968.
