A YOUNG batsman greatly members of the Midland Cricket club during the annual cricket tour from Wellington of the Motueka district during the holidays. Roger Pierce, who is just 15, played for both his club team, High School, and the senior representatives against the tourists, making 10 and 27 not out in the representative match and a most competent 31 for his school. Pierce displayed a sound defensive technique and a good range of scoring shots, driving particularly well in front of the wicket. Against bowling of good senior city standard he showed fine temperament and seldom seemed in serious trouble. Pierce may well follow in the footsteps of the increasing number of players from Motueka who have won places for Nelson, Central Districts and New Zealand. It is difficult to imagine any of leading New Zealand batsmen of today looking better prospects at the same age.
