Help For Needy In Hong Kong
Ninety members of the Girls’ Brigade in Christchurch spent yesterday making aprons to raise money for projects in Hong Kong.
Proceeds from the sale of aprons on Friday will be sent to the Epworth Village Children’s Home for the relief of distressed children in Hong Kong.
Groups of girls took their turns at sewing the aprons
in the window of the Farmers’ i Co-op. store in Cashel Street I Each apron took about 90 i minutes to complete. 1 The brigade's Interest tn the needy children of Hong ‘ Kong dates back to 1960 when 1 it was decided at the annual meeting to launch a short drive for funds as an effort for the World Refugee Year. In 1965 the national secretary of the Girls’ Brigade (Miss G. Gebbie, of Auckland) visited Epworth Village. Later the Girls’ Brigade in New Zealand was thanked for its help and received photographs of the 400 cottages for the homeless made possible through its help. Since then the companies
in the New Zeeland brigade have provided money and clothing for the Epworth Village centre. The Girls’ Brigade In New Zealand also sponsors the Shui Hal School on Lanta
Island, Hong’ Kong, through the Save the Children Fund. This was adopted by the New Zealand Pioneer Brigade in 1961. Regular reports are received on the progress and needs of the school.
