Cost Of Girl’s Uniform $40

A child’s first day at secondary school can be a sobering experience for parents, who must spend a minimum of $4O for a uniform.

According to a survey by “The Press” it would cost parents $40.01 to dress their daughter for her first day at Christchurch Girls’ High School. In every case the smallest size was price d—a 13fin neck measurement, 36in length and 32in bust.

Assistants in the schoolwear departments of stores, who are now in their busiest trading season, said the uniform for the Christchurch Girls’ High School gave a good indication of the average price for school uniforms in the Christchurch area.

Some schools have more elaborate requirements, which are more expensive.

Other items a Christchurch Girls’ High School pupil will need during the year include a winter tunic ($11.60), winter blouses ($2.55 each), rompers ($2.89), a raincoat ($17.88), a felt hat ($2.15) and a tie (62c). None of these items can be dispensed with and most girls have at least two summer and winter blouses. Stock sizes for school uniforms range between 36 to 44 inch lengths. If a girl is outside these categories her uniform has to be made at higher cost. With two summer and two winter blouses, the outlay on a uniform for an average child is about $82.80. This does not include such items as hat badges and gym shoes. However, not all parents must part out the total cost, for every child. Many buy good second-hand colthes and others pass the uniform on through the family. ! The cost of the uniform appears to be high but unless the girl grows very rapidly it should last her throughout her stay in secondary school. “It would cost a good deal more to dress an active girl in mufti clothes, a school official said.
