Big Blast Planned
(N.Z Press Association) GISBORNE, Jan. 23. Ten thousand pounds of explosives will be set off in the Waioeka Gorge, on the main highway between Gisborne and Opotiki. on January 31. An effort is being made to gain large boulders for river protection work in the gorge, which is subject to severe flooding. A 50ft tunnel has been drilled in a solid rock face and at the head of the tunnel there is a 90ft long cross drive to house the explosive charges in four chambers. The Ministry of Works resident engineer (Mr H. B. Goodman) said everything would be done to keep the public at least half a mile away from the blast. The main highway will be closed at 2 p.m. on the day of the blast, which is at 4 p.m., and the road will remain closed the next day.
