BIG FISH LANDED
Woman’s First (N.Z Preet Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 23. A Mount Albert grandmother, Mrs L. M. Langton, today became the first woman in New Zealand to land a broadbill when she landed the 5051 b fish at 5.55 a.m. off the Aiderman Islands after a battle through the night. She hooked the fish at noon yesterday. Nursing a sprained foot aboard her nephew’s 36ft launch, Yellow Fin, Mrs Langton brought the fish to double tackle five times during the night only yards from the launch. Each time the 12ft fish fought back clear of the launch and the battle started again. A Taupo angler, Mr D. Heatley, having a mar thon fight with a game fish in the same waters last night, was not as lucky. Thirty-one hours 55 minutes after hooking his unidentified quarry, he lost it when the double of his tackle broke just short of the trace, at 11.15 p.m.
“What a shame after all this time,” he said, “but it is just the luck of the game.” Mr Heatley. a solicitor, on his first deep-sea fishing expedition, hooked the fish on his 30th birthday on Sunday.
