Surprises In Junior Tennis Tournament
(N.Z. Press Association) BLENHEIM. A series of upsets added interest to the New Zealand age group tennis championships which continued in Blenheim yesterday. In the girls’ under-15 singles, the top seed, L. Ward (Auckland), was beaten by L Johns (Southland), 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, in a quarter-final match I The unseeded Miss Johns , was too consistent for the I Aucklander in the latter
stages of the first set and almost right through the final set. She found a weakness in Miss Ward’s backhand and attacked it at every opportunity. In the boys’ under-17 singles, the fourth seed, K McDonald (Auckland) fell to P. Liddell (Wellington), 6-4, 6-3, and in the boys’ under-15 singles, the seventh seed, T Mooney (Canterbury) was defeated by a Canterbury teammate, D. P. Schroeder, in a hard-hitting match, won by Schroeder, 6-3, 7-5.
