CAIRO TRIAL BEGINS
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)
CAIRO, Jan. 22. The trial of 54 men accused of trying to bring down the Nasser regime in the aftermath of the Arab-Israeli war opened amid strict security precautions in Cairo today. The accused include Egypt’s former intelligence chief, Salah Mohammed Nasr, who accompanied President Nasser on many foreign missions in recent years. Two others are the former War Minister, Shams Bradran, and Minister for the Interior, Abbas Radwan. They are accused of trying to bring down the Government by a coup, supported by tanks and planes, on the night of August 27, about 11 weeks after the war against Israel.
More than 30 of the accused face the death sentence.
