Anti-U.S. Work By Ky Alleged

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, January 21. Many of the recent manifestations of anti-Americanism in South Vietnam have been fomented by the VicePresident, Air Vice-Marshal Nguyen Cao Ky, according to the latest issue of “Newsweek” magazine.

The magazine said foreign residents in South Vietnam believed that Air ViceMarshal Ky was instigating

anti-American feelings to discredit his “arch-rival,” President Nguyen Cao Thieu. Marshal Ky’s chief agent was said to be a senior police officer, Colonel Thanh Tung, also known as “black flower.” “Newsweek” reported that the colonel distributes newsletters to the Vietnamese press which serve as a guide in their attacks on the Americans. “Vietnam’s political and social troubles are all the consequence of erroneous and unreasonable meddling by the Americans . . . the Vietnamese people don’t consider the Americans as allies, but as a category of bad and unwelcomed masters,” reads a passage quoted by the magazine from one recent letter. The anti-Amercianism was said to be part of the traditional Vietnamese dislike for every foreign power which has come to their land. Even President Thieu contributed to the feeling, in his recent outburst against the Americans for trying to arrange negotiations over the head of Saigon, “Newsweek” reported.

However, a long-range view of growing anti-Americanism is seen as a hopeful sign of a growing national pride on the part of the South Vietnamese, the magazine said. "You people should be pushing the Vietnamese so hard that you will part bitter enemies, but leave behind you solid accomplishments,” one British official was quoted as telling the Americans.
