GERMAN WEEK
Support From Embassy
The German Embassy has promised all possible assistance to the organisers of a German Week to be held in Christchurch in April. The First Secretary of the embassy (Mr H. Schatzschneider) discussed plans with the organisers yesterday. He said the embassy would help by arranging for a prominent German speaker to come to Christchurch and for the assembly of German works of art for exhibition. Mr Schatzschneider said relations between Germany and New Zealand had been fostered by the inclusion of the German language as a subject at all universities. He had been encouraged by the number of students interested in the language and the high degree of fluency they attained. Mr Schatzschneider met the chairman of the international relations committee of the Junior Chamber (Mr A. R. Cottrell) last night. Mr Cottrell said the Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Marshall) had agreed to visit Christchurch during German Week to give a special address. He said an exhibition nf German cultural items notably handicrafts and designs could be the focal point of activities during the week. Importers and exporters dealing between Germany and New Zealand had been asked to co-operate.
