News Organisation In Australia
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, January 22.
Representatives of the major press, radio and television bodies in Australia have formed a new organisation to be known as the Media Council of Australia. The president of the Australian Newspapers’ Council, Mr K. R. Murdoch, will act as first chairman of the combined organisation. The council membership consists of the Australian Accreditations Bureau, Australian Newspapers Council, Federation of Australian Commercial Broadcasters, Federation of Australian Commercial Television Stations. Australian Provincial Daily Press Limited and the Australian Provincial Press Association. Secretarial duties will be carried out by the existing Australian Newspapers' Council secretariat, with headquarters in Sydney. The media council’s formation was announced by Mr
Murdoch who said its objectives had been formulated to embrace the widest possible field covering general and specific matters affecting all sections of media if ultimately considered desirable. But it was intended to confine the intial operations to a streamlining of the existing provisions for accreditation of advertising procedure. The new council would greatly facilitate features of agency operations because, among other things, accreditations would be handled on behalf of media by the one body instead of by six as- at present, he said. Mr Murdoch said it was anticipated advertisers also would benefit by the elimination of duplication.
