Stylish Win By Top-weight
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. Hamua won the Douro Handicap, one of the glamour lower-class events of the year, with a brilliant gallop under top-weight of 8-11 at Trentham yesterday.
This was Hamua’s fourth win in succession from the S. A. Brown stable at Woodville. When Mr W. Bailey asked Brown to take this horse as a youngster the trainer showed less than mild interest. There was nothing in the horse’s family to appeal to Brown, but he was persuaded to it and in doing so he might have accepted a champion. W. D. Skelton had Hamua a close second to Barclay at the half-mile and was in front on the home turn. Royal Escort challenged go-
Ing to the furlong but the rugged-looking Hamua shook him off and then went to the post strongly to win by a length from R. J. Skelton’s mount, Arlstoc. Aristoc made ground from the turn, but he was forced wide and did well to shade Royal Escort for second. Impetus provided one of the highlights of the race by coming from last in the final three furlongs to finish fourth. He just beat Rags To Riches. The strongly-backed Riccarton ettt-y, Shipmaster, ran fairly close to the pace to the turn but weakened to 11th.
