Big Battle In Vietnam
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) SAIGON, Jan. 22. In the largest battle of 1968 so far, General William Westmoreland has sent United States land, sea and air forces to combat North Vietnamese troops moving towards South Vietnam’s northern border. Unofficial battlefield reports say that at least 450 North Vietnamese have been killed since units of three of their divisions attacked the “McNamara Line” on Friday and began a week-end of bloodshed. United States losses reported are 17 killed and 82 wounded. Into the struggle today went the largest weapon in the hands of the United States commanding general—-eight-engined Air Force Stratofortresses, which dropped tons of bombs in saturation strikes. Dive bombers struck North Vietnamese positions threatening Khe Sanh, Gio Dinh. Camp Carol, Con Thien and other United States outposts on the defensive line below the demilitarised border zone. At the same time United States Navy warships steamed close to the shore and bombarded North Vietnamese positions with shells.
