Learning The Language
Japanese visitors to New Zealand said Maori words quite naturally and pronounced them correctly, said the New Zealand assistant Trade Commissioner Designate to Japan (Mr G. H. Lewis) in Christchurch yesterday. Mr Lewis has been learning conversational Japanese for the last year. He will leave for Japan on March 13. He is a relative newcomer to the trade commissioner service, having served with the New Zealand Navy from 1943 to 1965.
Yesterday he had informal talks with the president of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association (Mr A. S. Farrar), the leader of next October’s Trade Mission to Japan (Mr J. R. Maddren), and the Director of the Association (Mr R. T. Alston). The District Officer of the Department of Industries and Commerce (Mr A. V. Church) also attended.
