TITLE TO FAIRLIE
Masterton Singles (N.Z. Press Association) MASTERTON. The Auckland tennis champion, B. E. Fairlie, won the Wairarapa open title when he outplayed and outstayed the Waikato contender, I. Beverley, in straight sets at Masterton yesterday. Fairlie also won the doubles with J. Souter (Wellington) in a tense three-set game against O. Parun, who was paired with the promising Wellington youngster, D. Hawkes. Miss S. Collins, who had earlier won the under-19 girls’ title, clinched the women’s open singles with a superb win in straight sets over the New South Wales contender, Miss V. Ode. Results:— Men’s Championship Singles.— B. E. Fairlie (Auckland) beat I. Beverley (Waikato), 6-3, 6-2. Men’s Championship Doubles. —Fairlie and J. Souter (Wellington) beat O. Parun (Wellington) and D. Hawkes (Wellington), 6-1, 7-9, 6-4. Women’s Championship Singles.—Miss S. Collins (Southland) beat Miss V. Ode (New South Wales), 8-6, 6-4. Women’s championship Doubles.—Misses Ode and P. Seery (New South Wales) beat Misses C. Marchant (New South Wales) and A. Davies (New South Wales). 6-4, 7-5. Mixed Doubles.—O. Parun and Miss Davies beat J. Wakefield (New South Wales) and Miss Marchant, 10-8, 6-2. Soccer Conference. —The New Zealand Football Association’s chairman (Mr J. Cowie, Wellington) and its promotions director (Mr C. J. Dempsey, Auckland) will join six other delegates at the inaugural meeting of the Oceania Football Confederation in Brisbane next week-end. The meeting will discuss means of creating better liaison between assocaitions which play soccer In tho South Pacific.
