Upset In Women’s Competition

A convincing win by the lowly Elmwood team against United, which had won every match it had played, has had a profound effect on the Christchurch senior women’s tennis competition. United’s lead of 23 points over its nearest rival. Edgeware, has been reduced to nine. Competition points, after completion of the first round, are:—United 58, Edgeware 49, Avonside 46, Elmwood 33, St Albans 30, Shirley 19. Elmwood, Edgeware and Avonside all had comfortable wins. W United was without two of its regular players and Elmwood had Miss R. Legge in Australia with the Wilson and Lintz Cups teams and another regular player away. The tone of the match was set when Miss J. Bishop and C. Swift took a set from the powerful United pair, Miss S. Field and C. Andrew. Miss Bishop confirmed her form in the New Zealand championships by overwhelming Miss Field. Miss Andrew nearly conceded a set to Miss Swift and Elmwood’s other players conceded only three games between them in winning their singles. St Albans, with two of f ts regular players away, suffered a 6-0 defeat at the hands of Edgeware. Mrs J. Emery, who took the first set from Miss R. Dillon was the only player who looked capable of stemming the Edgeware tide. Avonside was a little lucky to gain a 5-1 win against Shirley, as several matches went to the advantage set.

Mrs B. Leopold had a tremendous struggle to beat Mrs P. Sander, who was playing her only senior match of the season.

Avonside’s No. 1, Miss F. Thomson, played very well to beat Miss G. Hampton in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Results were:— Elmwood v. United Singles.—Miss J. Bishop beat Miss S. Field, 6-3, 6-3; Miss C.
