TROTTING Stewart Hanover Beats Holy Hal
"The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. Stewart Hanover, brilliantly driven by M. Holmes, beat his Wellington Gup conqueror, Holy Hal, in the Pacific Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double on the second night of the Wellington Trotting Club’s cup meeting at Hutt Park Raceway last night.
Holy Hal found the shorter distance and an extra 12 yards handicap too difficult.
Holmes kept Stewart Hanover sixth on the inside until the three furlongs. He worked him away from the fence on the home turn, was still fourth at the straight entrance and finished brilliantly to win going away by threequarters of a length. Holy Hal was eighth and was giving the leaders a good start to the three furlongs. He swept around the field to be fourth just before straightening but in the last furlong was only able to last for second. Thumberlina, which was given a good trail all the way, still looked a winning prospect at the half furlong but wilted slightly and was a nose behind Holy Hal at the end. Beau Martial, which attempted to lead over the last six furlongs, was run down in the final furlong. He finished a close fourth. Bass Strait ran a sound race for fifth ahead of Kiwi Express, which had his chance. James and Abbey Frost, which both lost their chance at the start, were the next two home. Demure completed a double worth $58.15 for SI and kept a winning record at the meeting intact when she beat a useful field of sprinters in the second leg. the Tasman Handicap. Demure, which had been rehandicapped to 12 yards for her win on the first night of the meeting, reached a challenging position on the home turn, and chased Golden Sands into the last furlong. Golden Sands took the lead from Toff Scott early in the run home, but could not cope with Demure s finishing run. Toff Scott battled on for third ahead of Coastaway and Milford Boy. The on-course double was won by Briganelli and Black On. The combination paid $15.60 for SI. The concession double,
Briganelli and Voodoo, paid $4.80 for $l. The meeting was held in fine weather and the track was fast. Results: COOK STRAIT HANDICAP, $820; trotters; 2:18 class; ijm. 1/3 BRIGANELLI (4) 24 N. L.
