Fast Mile By Bardowie

"The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. I The former Trentham trainer, IW. J. Bromby. returned to the jcourse this week with a formid- | able team for the Wellington Cup meeting, which will begin on Saturday. His trio, Bardowie (Wellington Cup), Pell Mell (Anniversary Handicap) and Red Arrow, which awaits the Douro Cup on Monday, all did well at Trentham yesterday. The galloping was mainly near the outside of the course proper, which is browning after recent hot weather. Further in, the racing surface has responded to watering and is much greener, but it will provide hard, fast footing unless the weather, breaks. Bardowie (Taylor) ran a mile and a quarter, the last mile in Imin 40sec, which is not often achieved at Trentham. He ran the last half-mile in 50 2-ssec and three furlongs in 36 4-ssec. He was bandaged all round, but whatever his trouble was, it did not seem to bother him.

R. W. Taylor, who rode him in the gallop, lost the cup mount when he was suspended last week-end. The ride has gone to the Hastings jockey, A. T. Jones. Pell Mell (Taylor) left the Riccarton galloper Royal Blue (K. Cullen) far behind in a six furlong trial. The two started together, but Pell Mell began to draw ahead after a furlong and he won by six lengths, running the last half-mile in 50sec and the last three furlongs in 37 l-ssec. He is another mount Taylor has lost to Jones.

Red Arrow (Taylor) was described by Bromby as the worst track worker in New Zealand, and he confirmed it by running 51sec for the last four of six furlongs.

"That would be good for him." Bromby said. "He’s slow on the track, but wait until race day/’ Taylor said after the gallop. Brilliant Riui The fastest sprint was half a mile in 47 2-ssec by the Wingatui horse Captain’s Command, which was ridden by his trainer, A. I. Powell. Captain’s Command took 35sec for the last three furlongs, which left nothing to be desired as a Telegraph Handicap trial. Barellan (Cullen), which will also contest the Telegraph Handicap, ran six furlongs down the chute, the last half-mile in 47 3-ssec. . Last summer Barellan had trouble with the crossing In a six-furlong race, but he came over it well enough this time, although he worked fairly wide. Barellan came from Te Awamutu with his stablemates, Ironbark and Arnie, on Monday. Punctures extended the trip to more than 14 hours and Ironbark did not travel well. He and Arnie did light work.

Billy Joe (Taylor) left half a mile behind in 4Q 2-ssec, the last three furlongs in 36 2-ssec. A. H. Ea&twood will ride Billy Joe at 7-3 in the Telegraph and the three-year-old looks thoroughly seasoned. He has had his share of bad luck, but he is not out of place among Barellan and the others. Kintyre (Cullen), which has recovered from the trouble which interrupted his spring training, went easily over the first furlong of four, and sprinted home in 35 3-ssec. The local pair, Dreeha (Nicol) and Miss Mod (McCutcheon) ran half a mile in 47 4-ssec, the last three furlongs in 34 4-5 sec. One of the meet notable arrivals at Trentham is Terrific, which, with his stablemate, Double Fault, did light work. Terrific was injured a day or I two before the race and the same misfortune has dogged him since he came home. He ran a highly encouraging fifth at Avondale last Saturday, however, giving his connections some hope that he will yet achieve a major win.
